Italian language certificate

The University of Pisa is obliged to test the Italian language proficiency (B2 level) of non EU candidates applying for Visa and willing to enroll in a Degree programme held in Italian.

The CLI centre (Language Centre of the University of Pisa) will provide the online test before Visa application allowing to certify the Italian language proficiency to the Italian diplomatic Authority that will then provide for study Visa.

The CLI centre will contact candidates according to appropriate schedules to give adequate information on test procedure. The Language proficiency test result will be certified by the University of Pisa in the pre-enrollment application.

For degree programmmes held in English, the Italian language knowledge is not compulsory. However the candidates have to upload any International certificate attesting English language Proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, etc.) on Universitaly portal during the pre-enrolment procedure.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates having obtained a study visa but no Italian language proficiency (B2 level) will be enrolled “under condition” until:

  • 31 March 2021: all students enrolled “under condition” in a Bachelor’s Degree or single cycle Degree Programme in Italian Language
  • 31 December 2021: all students enrolled “under condition” in a Master’s Degree Programme in Italian Language

Exemption from the language proficiency test


To be exempted from the Italian language test, but subject to the limit of quotas of reserved places for visa applicants and residents abroad, students should have obtained certificates of the Italian language proficiency with a grade not inferior to B2 level of the Council of Europe, awarded as determined by the CLIQ (Italian Quality Language Certification) quality system, which unites in one association the current certification bodies (University for Foreigners of Perugia, University for Foreigners of Siena, Rome Tre University and the Dante Alighieri Society) and University for Foreigners "Dante Alighieri" of Reggio Calabria, as well as in convention with Italian Institutes of Culture abroad or other institutions. These certifications may be obtained in the country of origin, in the approved exam centres found all over the world.

Exemption From The Italian Language Proficiency Test And From Quotas Of Reserved Places For Non Eu Visa Applicants Residing Abroad


The following students are exempted from the Italian Language test and enrolled indipendently of the quotas of reserved places for non EU citizens applying for Visa and residing abroad:

  1. students holding a 4- or 5-year secondary school diploma awarded by Italian State or State-recognised schools abroad; 
  2. students holding a final secondary School qualifications as listed in Annex 2; 
  3. students with certificates pertaining to the Lower Secondary School final qualification obtained in Argentina, certifying the attendance of a study course including the Italian language teaching, for at least 5 years, pursuant to Law no. 210 of 7.6.1999 (G.U. no. 152 of 1.7.1999); 
  4. students with the Diploma in Italian Language and Culture of the Universities for Foreigners of Perugia and Siena; 
  5. students having the certification in Italian language proficiency, with a grade of C1 or C2 of the Council of Europe, awarded as determined by the CLIQ (Italian Quality Language Certification) quality system, which unites in one association the current certification bodies (Universities for Foreigners of Perugia and Siena, Roma Tre University and the Dante Alighieri Society), as well as those issued by the University for Foreigners “Dante Alighieri” of Reggio Calabria, also in convention with Italian Institutes of Culture abroad or other accredited institutions. 
  6. For enrolment in Master’s Degree Programmes (if the test is autonomously required by the University) exemption is granted to all students holding the qualifications detailed in the previous letters d) and e).
