In the 2012-2013 academic year the University of Pisa will offer eight Second Cycle (MA/MSc) Degree Programmes taught in English. Five of these are new, whereas three were already available in 2011-2012. Six of them can accept all qualified students who wish to enrol, whereas two have a limit on the number of students they can accept. Three are taught in collaboration with the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna.

corsiInglese1Four of the programmes are in the Engineering Area: Aerospace Engineering, whose President is Mariano Andrenucci; Computer Engineering e Embedded Computing Systems, President Gigliola Vaglini; and Nuclear Engineering, President Walter Ambrosini. Three of the Informatics programmes are linked to the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences: Computer Science, President Francesco Romani; Computer Science and Networking, President Marco Vanneschi; and Business Informatics, President Antonio Albano. Finally there is Economics, whose President is Pier Mario Pacini. In the Economics sector, there is also a consolidated special professionalising programme in Business Administration ("Master" in the Italian definition), directed by Marco Allegrini. In previous years this programme (which lasts 12 months) has had 90% international students coming from 38 countries.

The University of Pisa's teaching offer in English was presented Thursday 12 July 2012 at Palazzo alla Giornata -- the Rectorate -- by Rector Massimo Augello, by Vice Pro-Rector Nicoletta De Francesco, by the Pro-Rectors for Internationalisation, Alessandra Guidi, and for Teaching, Paolo Mancarella, by the Delegate for Internationalisation, Marco Guidi, and by the Presidents of the Degree Programmes involved.

"In Pisa – the Rector said – we do not intend to follow the path of the Polytechnical University of Milan, which will propose Second Cycle Degree Programmes entirely in English starting in 2014, even though we want to expand our teaching offer in English, both in order to attract more students and professors from abroad and in order to allow our own students to perfect their use of other languages. This is an important aspect of that concrete path towards internationalisation which from the beginning of our mandate has been one of our priorities and an area which is giving us great satisfaction. We may recall that just a few days ago the international ranking agency QS awarded four stars to the University of Pisa, and five stars in the areas of research, technological innovation and access of students, after an in-depth audit of the University's main activities; and that the "QS World University Rankings by Subject" has classified 11 of our subject areas among the first 200 in the world, from Physics (49th place worldwide) to the Modern Languages, from Chemistry to Pharmacology, from Geophysics to Computer science, from Chemical and Electrical Engineering to Mathematics, from Medicine to Statistics.

Pro-Rector Alessandra Guidi and Delegate Marco Guidi pointed out that the courses taught in English are not limited to the eight Second Cycle Degree Programmes and the 12-month MBA; they also include segments of various Degree Programmes in different subject areas consisting of semesters taught in English in the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Letters and Philosophy, Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences and in Veterinary Sciences, as well as summer schools in the Faculties of Letters, Medicine, Sciences and Veterinary Sciences.

Pro-Rector for Teaching Paolo Mancarella pointed out that for the Programmes taught in English, just like all the others, the enrolment period is from 30 July to 31 December, but in order to check the deadlines and any special requirements for enrolment, it is advisable to consult the websites of the specific Programme.
