According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2019, the University of Pisa is among the top one hundred in the world in five subjects, confirming its distinction in the sectors where the University has a long tradition of excellence: from the rankings the University is top in “Classics and Ancient History” (26th place)“Mathematics”, “Physics and Astronomy” and “Computer Science and Information Systems” (all between 51st and 100th). This year the University earned an excellent place for the new subject introduced by QS, “Library and Information Management”, where Pisa gained 50th place in the world.qs rankings by subj 2019 3

More in general, the University of Pisa is present in 24 subjects out of the 48 surveyed by QS Rankings, covering all 5 subject areas. In almost all 24 subjects, the University of Pisa is among the first 10 in Italy. “Our University improves year after year,” declares the rector Paolo Mancarella. “Comparing the results of the last three years, in the 5 macro areas, the University has confirmed the levels of excellence already reached in "Natural Sciences" and in "Engineering and Technology" and it has moved up around 50 places in “Arts and Humanities”, "Life Science and Medicine" and “Social Sciences and Management”. I am particularly satisfied by the result reached in “Computer Science and Information Systems”, thanks also to the Departments of Computer Science and of Information Engineering, considering that we are about to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Italian degree course in Computer Science which was launched at the University of Pisa in 1969: the foresight of the person who believed in it then has definitely paid off!”

There are also a number of single subjects which have improved with respect to the previous year: "Modern Languages” (from 251-300 to 101-150), “Statistics and Operational Research” (from 151-200 to 101-150), “Linguistics”, "Chemical Engineering” and "Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering” (all from 201-250 to 151-200), “Chemistry” and “English Language and Literature” (from 251-300 to 201-250).
For the 2019 edition, QS World University Rankings by Subject assessed 1,200 universities located in 153 countries, examining 48 subjects divided into 5 macro sectors on the basis of indicators such as quality of research and the reputation of the universities.
