The University of Pisa has confirmed its position among the world’s leading universities in the 2025 edition of the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which evaluates more than 1,900 institutions worldwide across 57 disciplines in the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.
In the 2025 edition, the University of Pisa is featured in 24 subject areas. Its best result comes in Veterinary Sciences, where it is ranked 25th worldwide and second in Italy. Close behind is Robotics, which enters the ranking for the first time, placing the University 29th globally and again second in Italy.
Podium-level results were also achieved in Mathematics, where the University of Pisa ranks in the 76–100 range worldwide and second in Italy, alongside the Politecnico di Milano, Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Turin. This is followed by Energy Science and Engineering, where the University ranks first in Italy alongside the Politecnico di Milano and the Politecnico di Torino, and in the 101–150 range globally.
Other excellent results include Aerospace Engineering and Pharmacy, which are both ranked in the 51–75 range worldwide and fifth in Italy, while Agricultural Sciences and Physics place the University seventh in Italy and in the 101–150 range globally.
The Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) measures research quality in individual disciplines using objective indicators such as the number of highly cited researchers, publications in high-impact journals, citation impact, international collaboration, and the presence of academic awards among faculty members.
