MIT-UNIPI Project - IX call for proposals

Objectives

The MIT-UNIPI Project aims to facilitate exchanges and collaborative research activities between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Pisa in all scientific areas.

Scientific collaborations and exchanges between research groups are already up and running between MIT and the University of Pisa.
The MIT-UNIPI Project aims to expand them through new projects which will be supported by Seed Funds and which will support new collaborations in their initial phase.

In recognition of the fact that one can only truly speak of partnership when knowledge, creativity and research activities flow bi-directionally, the MIT-UNIPI Project will promote research activities that envisage truly reciprocal exchanges.

The MIT-UNIPI Project will finance Seed Funds to promote new research collaborations between the University of Pisa and MIT. Proposals must be submitted by two PIs - one from UNIPI, the other from MIT.

Consult the page http://web.mit.edu/research/ in order to identify possible collaborations with MIT research groups.

Evaluation of proposals

The proposals will be evaluated by the MIT-UNIPI Project, according to the following criteria:

  • scientific quality;
  • originality;
  • innovation;
  • sustainability of the project;
  • novelty of the collaboration;
  • balance and complementarity of participation between the two teams;
  • involvement of students and / or graduates;
  • sustainability of the collaboration beyond the financing period.

Proposals will be evaluated in a first phase by blind evaluators from MIT. The final decision on funding rests with the Scientific Board composed of representatives from both MIT and UNIPI.

Maximum award and types of expenditure

Seed Funds - up to a maximum of $23,000 for the entire proposal (including both UNIPI and MIT expenses) - can be used for:

  1. travel, food and accommodation expenses of the research group from our University going to MIT;
  2. the research group's participation in conferences for the dissemination of research results;
  3. open access publications of research results

Expenses relating to cost items n.2 and n. 3 must be included in the entry “Non-travel related items (meeting and / or workshop)” of the proposal.

Period in which the activities are anticipated to take place

In view of the international health situation, projects are expected to start in the summer of 2021.

We hope to be able to communicate more concrete information on the proposed start and end dates of activities to future winners, in agreement with MIT, once the evaluation process has taken place.

How to submit the proposal

Only one proposal may be submitted per research group.
Research groups (PI and members of the group) who have previously been funded by the MIT-UNIPI Project and whose projects are still active at the time of the deadline for the IX call (14 December 2020) cannot submit proposals in response to this call.

It is possible to submit the application online via the MIT-UNIPI Project website: https://mistigsf.fluidreview.com/.
