Your Own Doctor in Pisa
If you are a non-EU student and want to choose your own trusted doctor (medico di fiducia), it is first necessary to enrol in the Italian National Health Service for the current year by paying euro 149,77.
Please do not forget that current year means that enrolment only lasts until December 31st each year - it doesn’t matter when you apply - and must be renewed each calendar year.
The payment must be done by postal money order (in Italian called “bollettino postale”) to the post account c/c 289504, in the name of “Regione Toscana”, with the payment reference (in Italian “causale di pagamento”) listed with the current year: “Contributo SSN 2023 Studente Straniero”.
This can be done at any post office.
After having paid, please bring your health insurance post office receipt (the one which shows that you have made the payment to the Italian National Health Service “Servizio Sanitario Nazionale”) to the Health District in via Garibaldi 198.
Office hours: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. (also open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.).
At the Health District, you will be able to:
- get the health card (info in English);
- choose your personal doctor free of charge, showing the post office receipt. You are welcome to ask the staff for a doctor who can communicate in English.
The list of doctors in Pisa is available at this link.
Please bear the following in mind regarding the offices:
- other than your passport and tax code (“codice fiscale”) details, it will be necessary to provide your phone number and email address;
- if your address is now different to what you declared when registering for your tax code, it is fundamental that you change your address at the Admissions Agency (“Agenzia delle Entrate”) at via Matteucci 34, before applying for your health card (”tessera sanitaria”) at the ASL counters.
This is important to avoid errors and delays in the delivery of your health card; - do not forget to ask the location and opening hours of the doctor’s office
