Pāṇini's Sanskrit Grammar

panini banner

The school concentrates on the study of traditional Sankrit grammar systems, with special reference to the text of the founder of the school, Pāṇini (c.a V BC) who inspired in depth modern developments in linguistic thought. It combines the traditional approach with notions and reflections on contemporary Linguistics.

In each edition, the School offers an in-depth look at a specific topic; in this year's programme the focus will be on Pāṇini's account of accent in comparison with modern accounts of Vedic accent.

This Summer School is realized with the sponsorship of the International PhD Programme in Philological-Literary and Historical-Cultural Studies of the Literature, Languages and Cultural Heritage Department, University of Cagliari.

Teachers:
Maria Piera Candotti (Università degli Studi di Pisa)
Malhar Kulkarni (Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay)
Tiziana Pontillo (Università degli Studi di Cagliari)

The program will be held both on campus and online, via Microsoft Teams.

Aim

The principal aim of the school is to offer to students the basic tools that will allow them to get to grips with the Pāṇinian text and learn to handle its technicalities and subtleties.
Students will gain a grounding in the principal sections of Pāṇini’s grammar (primary and secondary derivation, compounding, allomorphy and phonosyntax) through intensive reading sessions followed, in the afternoon, by a session of exercises.
