Evidence based medicine and research in rehabilitation of childhood disabilities: a course on research in child rehabilitation and good clinical practice in collaboration with the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD)

This Summer School, which is organized in collaboration with the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) and with the support of the IRCCS Fondazione Stella Maris, is a practical and immersive course, covering the models, the procedures and instruments that are required internationally to plan and conduct research in rehabilitation of childhood disabilities, guided by good clinical practice.

The course faculty will be constituted of European experts in the field of childhood disability research.

The 5-day course will be divided in:

  1. Morning: theoretical teaching organized in lectures covering theoretical frameworks and models
  2. Afternoon: practical training in which participants will be directly involved to practise the design and the planning of research questions and the elaboration of research activities.
  3. Meet the expert sessions (morning and/or evening): personal experience sharing by international calibre researchers in the field of childhood disability.

Programme outline:

Day 1: Patient and family-centred research – identifying a research question together.

Day 2: From research question to research proposal – methodological issues in childhood disability research.

Day 3: The childhood disability research toolbox – instruments and measurements in neurodevelopmental and rehabilitation science.

Day 4: Good clinical practice in childhood disability research – fostering the credibility, scientific and ethical quality of your research.

Day 5: My career in childhood disability research – a look towards the future based on the week’s experiences.

Aim

The aims of the Summer School are: a) to skill participants to conduct research in the field of rehabilitation of childhood disability in the work environment and at home, guided by the principles of good clinical practice and b) to promote international collaboration in Europe in evidence based research in childhood disability.

At the end of the course the participants:

  1. Will be familiar with the concepts of family-centered research
  2.  Will have the tools to develop and promote a research plan in childhood disability and rehabilitation, based on their research hypothesis
  3. Will be aware of the specific challenges related to conducting clinical research with children with disabilities and their families, and be equipped to anticipate and overcome them
  4.  Will be able to integrate the newly acquired knowledge to advance their research career by formulating a mid- to long-term research strategy
  5.  Will be familiar with the European and international clinical research environment in childhood disability and rehabilitation
  6.  Will be able to build on this knowledge to foster regional and international research partnerships

Who can apply

The course is specifically addresed to young clinicians and researchers (aged less than 35 years, not turned at the beginning of the school) working in the disciplines related to rehabilitation of childhood disabilities with interest in performing research in this field 

Education:

-medical Doctors (specialists or residents in child neurology, child psychiatry rehabilitation medicine or paediatrics)

-Master degrees in allied disciplines dealing with childhood disabilities (such as physical, occupational, speech therapy, psychology, special education and other disciplines)

-PhD or at least two publications in international peer-reviewed journals or one as the first author. 

-Living and working in Europe or another country represented in the EACD (http://www.eacd.org).

Position:

-even if not permanent- in an academic or clinical institution involved in research/clinical activity, supported by letter of presentation of the responsible of the institution.

-Fluency in written and spoken English (equivalence of B2)

For the SELECTION, a maximum of 32 participants will be selected based on Curriculum Vitae (CV) and the above criteria. The CV should address the above mentioned criteria. A motivation letter and a letter of support by the supervisor to follow this course should be presented. Preference will be for the maximum of 3 participants per each country and to include at least 8 participants out of the 32 from lower economic income countries of Europe (based on the GNI (nominal per capita less than $ 20.000) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_in_Europe_by_GNI_(nominal)_per_capita.

For candidates who will obtain identical scores for the CV and the above criteria, preference will be given according to the date of application.

The selection of participants based on the above criteria will be made by the ‘EACD Summer School 2019 ad hoc committee’ (EACD is the scientific and economic co-promoter of the Summer School). The committee includes also two members of the University of Pisa. After a first selection based on provided data, a selection interview will be decisive.

The cost for the course will be €500 and covers accommodation, breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks. Applicants can also request for a BURSARY (includes €500 fee and up to €300 for travel cost). A bursary request letter can be send together with the application or via EACD web site (www.eacd.org). Payment of the registration has to be made directly to the University of Pisa by all accepted applicants, including the recipients of a bursary. Applicants will be informed of the acceptance of the bursary, together with the acceptance of their application to the summer school.
