He received the degree in Physics from Pisa University, Italy, in 1974. From 1975 to 1981 he was research fellow firstly at the Institute of Clinical Physiology in Pisa, after at the Engineering Faculty in Florence and finally at the Interfaculty Center \u2018E. Piaggio\u2019 of the Engineering Faculty in Pisa.<br \/>\r\nIn 1981 he joined the Engineering Faculty of Pisa as Assistant Professor.<br \/>\r\nFrom 1981 to 1988 he was member of the European working group on \u2018Ultrasonic Tissue Characterization and Echographic Imaging\u2019. In 1982 he was invited to join the position of Visiting Research Associate Professor of Physics at the Washington University in St. Louis (USA) in the field of 'Ultrasonic Tissue Characterization'. From 1993 to 1996 he joined the EU Concerted Action (project BIOMED1) on 'Pharmacologic stress echocardiography' and from 1995 to 1996 he was scientific coordinator of a EU ESPRIT-CAPRI project on: \u2018A parallel computer-based system for dynamic 3D (4D) medical image processing\u2019.
