These efforts are aligned with <strong>Goals 7 \u2013 Affordable and Clean Energy<\/strong>,<strong> 9 \u2013 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure<\/strong>,<strong> 11 \u2013 Sustainable Cities and Communities<\/strong>, and<strong> 13 \u2013 Climate Action<\/strong> of the 2030 Agenda. Since 2014, the University has appointed an <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.unipi.it\/\">Energy Manager<\/a> who works within and in coordination with the Building Management Division to promote technical and managerial measures for analysing, reducing and monitoring energy consumption.<\/p>\n<h2>Sustainable buildings: refurbishment and new green construction<\/h2>\n<p>The University\u2019s historic and modern buildings are being developed according to sustainability criteria. Each renovation or new construction project \u2014 such as the San Rossore Campus, the new Engineering Teaching Centre, or the Veterinary Clinic \u2014 is integrated into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/194.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University\u2019s building plan<\/a>. This plan integrates high-performance materials, passive solar shading solutions to limit summer overheating, and efficient systems, with attention to the durability and recyclability of materials.<\/p>\n<h2>Renewable energy: photovoltaics and beyond<\/h2>\n<p>In order to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and increase the share of clean energy, the University is promoting the installation of photovoltaic systems for self-consumption on existing buildings, through <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.unipi.it\/index.php\/consumi-di-ateneo\/item\/77-piano-fv-ateneo\">planning<\/a>, design, implementation and <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.unipi.it\/index.php\/monitoraggio-impianti-fotovoltaici\">monitoring activities<\/a>. The University is also including new systems in its plans for newly constructed buildings. These technologies are part of the strategy to reduce the University\u2019s energy footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the integration of sustainable design and renewable energy production.<\/p>\n<h2>Monitoring and responsibility: the University Climate Pledge<\/h2>\n<p>The University has formalised a Climate Pledge, which involves monitoring energy consumption, improving building and system efficiency, encouraging responsible and energy-aware behaviours, supporting the generation of renewable electricity for self-consumption, and purchasing electricity from certified renewable sources. This commitment is also monitored through reporting documents such as the <em>Climate Pledge Monitoring Report<\/em>, which help to measure progress over time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/climatpledge24.pdf\">Climate Pledge 2024<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/Climate-Pledge-2023.pdf\">Climate Pledge 2023<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/Climate-Pledge-2022.pdf\">Climate Pledge 2022<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Digital good practices: saving energy on the screen<\/h2>\n<p>Using digital devices consciously is an integral part of the University&#8217;s energy sustainability strategy.
