Project description<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The PhD programme offers training, research and evaluation activities to be carried out at the University of Pisa, the University of Florence, and the University of Siena, except for research stays (in Italy or abroad) that are planned in accordance with the training and research activities foreseen by the programme.<\/p>\n

Throughout the three years, all PhD students are required to attend six courses and three seminar cycles, to submit a thesis proposal by the end of the first year, a research progress report by the end of the second year, and the final dissertation by the end of the third year.<\/p>\n

The PhD Programme supports the enhancement and dissemination of research results, safeguards intellectual property, and ensures open public access to research outcomes and related data as quickly and with as few restrictions as possible, in line with the principles of Open Science and FAIR Data.<\/p>\n

The Programme strongly promotes the international dimension of doctoral training through close collaborations with major international universities, all of which are directly represented on the Academic Board: \u00c9cole Polytechnique (France), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA), Stanford University (USA), and University of Stuttgart (Germany).<\/p>\n

An International Advisory Board (https:\/\/dottorato.di.unipi.it\/ab\/) has also been established, featuring representatives from the European Commission, Google (USA), IBM (USA), Huawei (France), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA).<\/p>\n

The PhD Programme currently hosts four cotutelle agreements: three “incoming” with the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC, Brazil \u2014 2 from cycle 37 and 1 from cycle 38) and one “outgoing” with the University of Extremadura (UEx, Spain \u2014 cycle 38). In addition, six other \u201cincoming\u201d cotutelles have recently been successfully completed with: the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC, Brazil \u2014 3 from cycle 35), the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PURCS, Brazil \u2014 cycle 34), Universit\u00e9 Paris-Saclay (France \u2014 cycle 33), and the West University of Timi\u0219oara (Romania \u2014 cycle 33).<\/p>\n

The Programme currently includes one PhD student funded by a Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020#956229 ALPACA) and three PhD students who have recently completed fellowships funded by Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (2 through H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018#813170 EVOCATION and 1 through H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017#764759 MINOA).<\/p>\n

The Programme further promotes the international dimension of research training by taking advantage of 185 cooperation agreements between the University of Pisa and foreign universities and institutions (https:\/\/accordi-internazionali.cineca.it\/ricerca-avanzata<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Course objectives<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The overall objective of the PhD Programme in Computer Science is to train researchers and innovators in information science and technology who can carry out original research, enhancing the value of research outcomes, and promoting and managing innovation in both the public and private sectors.<\/p>\n

Graduates of the PhD Programme in Computer Science are equipped to foster and manage innovation not only in ICT applications to other domains\u2014starting with public administrations\u2014but also across the many interdisciplinary fields of computer science, from bioinformatics and smart health to smart agriculture and the industrial technologies of Industry 5.0, to name but a few.<\/p>\n

The programme also aims to train researchers and innovators capable of promoting and managing the dissemination of innovative models for applied research in businesses, whether ICT-based or not, thereby supporting the digital transformation and advancement of production processes.<\/p>\n
