In line with this project, aimed at training high-level researchers, the PhD programme does not include university-style classroom teaching, but rather conferences and seminars held by Italian and international scholars. These are offered within the framework of five seminar series listed below, from which each candidate may freely choose, based on their specific interests and broader academic inclinations, for a total of 60 hours per year. During these seminars, PhD students can actively engage in discussion with experienced scholars who are recognised authorities in their respective fields. Consistent with the international scope of the PhD programme, research stays abroad and co-supervised doctoral theses (cotutelle) are strongly encouraged.

Course objectives
At a time when historical research in Italy is experiencing moderate expansion, with significant renewal and broadening of its themes—showing increasing attention to areas such as mindsets, collective, gender and social identities—the aim of the programme is to train highly qualified researchers in the field of history, understood in its broadest sense both chronologically (from the ancient Near East and Egypt, and the Greco-Roman world to the present day) and geographically, capable of producing original scientific investigations. The doctoral thesis must above all demonstrate the candidate’s ability to engage competently in academic research or highly qualified intellectual work. However, the training provided—specifically aimed at developing the ability to analyse and understand economic, social, political and cultural phenomena—also offers valuable tools for interpreting contemporary reality, which may be effectively applied across various professional fields, from teaching at all levels, to journalism in its different forms, and to all areas of culture and the cultural industries.

Scientific-disciplinary areas
Demo-Ethno-Anthropological Disciplines
Egyptology and Coptic Civilisation
Semitic Studies
