Here, researchers tested a team of intelligent robots capable of communicating with one another: <strong>the underwater drone Zeno, developed by the University of Pisa, and FeelHippo, developed by the University of Florence<\/strong> as an autonomous surface vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The robots can autonomously follow the edge of <em>Posidonia<\/em> meadows, while optical and acoustic images of the seabed are processed directly on board using artificial intelligence algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the project\u2019s main achievements,\u201d explains <strong>Riccardo Costanzi<\/strong>, Professor of Robotics at the University of Pisa, \u201cwas the use of artificial intelligence algorithms for <strong>the automatic recognition of different seabed types. Our robots learned to distinguish sandy and rocky seabeds, as well as the presence of live and dead <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em><\/strong>. Until now, monitoring the meadows of this plant \u2014 which is fundamental for the health of marine ecosystems \u2014 has mainly relied on human divers who, besides operating at high cost and risk, can only cover limited areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-500182 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno_1-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, the advantages of this robotic solution include the precision of the surveys, ease of use, low operating costs, and the possibility of repeating the same routes over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince GPS cannot be used underwater,\u201d continues <strong>Alessandro Ridolfi<\/strong>, Professor of Robotics at the University of Florence, \u201cthe PANACEA project proposes an innovative robotic system based on cooperation between an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV). While the underwater vehicle collects data on <em>Posidonia<\/em>, the surface vehicle maintains an acoustic communication channel with it. This makes it possible to determine the precise position of the underwater vehicle and display its processed data on a graphical interface on a computer located onshore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-500178 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/zeno2-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this system, operators can monitor the progress of the mission and the state of the observed environment in near real time, without needing to directly control the vehicle. The entire system represents a complete and integrated infrastructure, an example of collaboration between robotics engineering and marine
