This is the main finding of an international study coordinated by the University of Pisa, which shows that <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the level of social despotism is the key factor in determining the presence or absence of play among adult primates<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, regardless of their evolutionary history.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The research, published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/rsbl\/article-abstract\/22\/4\/20250597\/481535\/Despotism-trumps-phylogeny-in-explaining?redirectedFrom=fulltext\"><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Biology Letters<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, analysed <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">37 primate species, including chimpanzees, bonobos, macaques, lemurs and monkeys<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more tolerant species, adult play is very common (in over 90% of cases), whereas in more authoritarian ones it is rare or absent<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. By contrast, physical characteristics such as body weight or sex differences do not influence this behaviour.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat clearly emerges is that <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is not so much \u2018who you are\u2019 in evolutionary terms that makes the difference, but \u2018how you live\u2019 from a social perspective<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d explains <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elisabetta Palagi<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Pisa and coordinator of the study. \u201cEven animals that are very similar can behave differently depending on how tolerant their social groups are. In more rigid and authoritarian societies, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">play among adults tends to disappear, along with the social benefits it brings<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as reduced conflict, stronger social bonds and increased cooperation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-493480 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/primati.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/primati.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/primati-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/primati-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To classify primate societies<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we assessed <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">three key dimensions<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of social relationships,\u201d adds <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Martina Francesconi<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, PhD candidate in the Department of Biology at the University of Pisa. \u201cThese include <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grooming<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2014 that is, mutual cleaning of the fur, which acts as a key social bonding mechanism \u2014 <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">conflict management<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, meaning reconciliation and consolation dynamics after a clash, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the rigidity of dominance hierarchies<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe results show <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">striking parallels with human societies<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as demonstrated by anthropological studies used for comparison,\u201d Palagi concludes. \u201cIn hunter-gatherer populations, play and humour among adults are associated with cooperation and non-coercive forms of social regulation, whereas in more authoritarian systems these expressions tend to be limited, with potential effects on creativity and mutual trust.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study, one of the most comprehensive comparative analyses on this topic, was coordinated by the Ethology Unit of the Department of Biology at the University of Pisa, under the leadership of Elisabetta Palagi, with a significant contribution from PhD candidate Martina Francesconi. It also involved the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">University of Turin<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">University of Tennessee (USA)<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">University of Lethbridge (Canada)<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The team reviewed scientific literature from 1965 to 2024, analysing the data using advanced statistical models. The research was developed within workshops and research groups dedicated to the study of the evolution of play and was supported by the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PRIN 2022 project <\/span><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLOL! The evolutionary roots of human laughter\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, funded by the European Union \u2013 Next Generation EU<\/span><\/b><span
