The name and logo are the result of a design competition involving students from the Department.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-479931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio2.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio2-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio2-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio2-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio2-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Radio astronomy is a branch of modern astrophysics that does not observe the sky through visible light, but rather \u201clistens\u201d to it, capturing and analysing radio waves coming from space<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This approach makes it possible to study the Universe in a different and complementary way compared with optical telescopes, providing an unprecedented map of celestial bodies and physical phenomena invisible to the human eye.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new instrument \u2014 a radio telescope with a 5-metre-diameter dish \u2014 <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is designed to detect radio signals at a frequency of 1420 MHz<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, corresponding to the so-called 21 cm emission line of neutral hydrogen: a key signature for studying the distribution of this element in the Universe and tracing the structure of our Galaxy. It is equipped with an automatic pointing and tracking system and connected via fibre optics to the control room located in the Department\u2019s teaching laboratories.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The inauguration took place as part of an event open to the public, featuring live observations and a discussion on the frontiers of space exploration with astronaut Roberto Vittori and science journalist <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Piero Bianucci<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Also present were Rector<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Riccardo Zucchi<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chiara Maria Angela Roda<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Director of the Department of Physics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-479933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio3.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio3-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio3-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio3-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/radiotelescopio3-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe new radio telescope is a professional instrument that enables astrophysical observations of great educational and scientific value,\u201d explained Professor<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Massimiliano Razzano<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the University of Pisa, the scientific coordinator of the new instrument. \u201cUnlike traditional telescopes, it can operate during the day and even under cloudy skies, thus maximising its potential use. In addition to the 21-centimetre line, its high sensitivity allows the detection of various types of radio sources, from the Sun to other classes such as supernova remnants and radio galaxies.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis investment was made possible through funding from the Ministry of University and Research within the framework of the \u2018Department of Excellence\u2019 programme,\u201d said Professor<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Dario Pisignano<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the Department of Physics. \u201cIt is a recognition of the quality and innovative nature of the Department\u2019s research, which today translates into cutting-edge instrumentation and new opportunities for students and researchers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLaboratory experience is a central element in the training of physicists,\u201d concluded <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chiara Maria Angela Roda<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cHaving access to advanced instruments such as this radio telescope allows students to engage directly with research during their studies. The installation of this instrument is a remarkable achievement made possible by the collective effort of the Department staff and the University administration.\u201d<\/span><span
