{"id":245528,"date":"2025-10-08T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T09:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/news\/dai-papiri-carbonizzati-nuovi-dettagli-su-zenone-fondatore-dello-stoicismo\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T11:35:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T10:35:20","slug":"dai-papiri-carbonizzati-nuovi-dettagli-su-zenone-fondatore-dello-stoicismo","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/en\/news\/dai-papiri-carbonizzati-nuovi-dettagli-su-zenone-fondatore-dello-stoicismo\/","title":{"rendered":"New Details on Zeno, Founder of Stoicism, Revealed from Carbonised Papyri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A recent scientific analysis carried out on the carbonised papyri of Herculaneum, preserved at the \u201cVittorio Emanuele III\u201d National Library of Naples, has brought to light new evidence concerning Zeno of Citium, founder of Stoicism, offering an unprecedented insight into his life. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Physical frailty, most probably due to a frugal diet, and a tendency to isolation that led him to avoid banquets, confirm the image of an ascetic wholly devoted to philosophical reflection. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stoicism is an ancient philosophical school founded in Athens by Zeno around 300 BC. It teaches how to live according to virtue, reason and nature, in order to attain happiness through control of passions and detachment from what lies beyond one\u2019s power.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study, published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-19911-w\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Springer Nature), was conducted within the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant Project 885222-GreekSchools (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greekschools.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/greekschools.eu\/<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), coordinated by Graziano Ranocchia of the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics at the University of Pisa. The project is devoted, among other things, to the analysis of the carbonised papyri of Herculaneum using various diagnostic techniques.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-244773 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The discoveries were made possible by increasingly precise technologies applied to these fragile texts. For the first time, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a team of researchers from the Institute of Heritage Science (CNR-Ispc) and the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems \u201cEduardo Caianiello\u201d (CNR-Isasi) of the National Research Council<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> applied <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">active thermography<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to the papyri, making the texts of several unrolled scrolls\u2014otherwise invisible to the naked eye\u2014perfectly legible. These include historical and philosophical works of inestimable value such as the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History of the Stoic School<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the presumed <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History of the Pythagorean School<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the so-called <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History of the Epicurean School<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by Philodemus of Gadara (110 \u2013 after 40 BC), who was the custodian or owner of the celebrated library discovered in the mid-18th century during the Bourbon excavations of the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn papyrus <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PHerc. 1018<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, containing the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History of the Stoic School<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zeno of Citium\u2019s famous work <\/span><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Republic<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is described as <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">morally questionable<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, since <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it recommends sexual and social practices deemed embarrassing<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Zeno, of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Phoenician origin<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is mocked<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for his poor command of the Greek language, a sign of the Greeks\u2019 disdain towards non-Greek-speaking foreigners,\u201d explains Graziano Ranocchia. \u201cIt is also reported that, at a banquet or a thermal bath, he complained about being seated near the entrance, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was accused of annoying the young men with his chatter and reproaches<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, being <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ridiculed<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for his supposed inability to provide even a simple cauldron of hot water. However, upon his death, he was accorded a solemn public funeral owing to his great philosophical renown.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-244771 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/foto_papiri1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The technology applied<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The active thermography technique is capable of creating an unexpected contrast between the writing and the carbonised support\u2014comparable only to that achieved by short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging\u2014and provides useful information for conservation, such as the characteristics of the papyrus weave and the points where the papyrus sheets were glued to the cardboard backing. The active thermography experiments were carried out with mobile laboratories at the Officina dei Papiri Ercolanesi of the National Library of Naples by two research teams from CNR-Isasi and CNR-Ispc. The latter used portable instrumentation developed within the MUR PON IR SHINE project, aimed at enhancing the MOLAB platform operating within the E-RIHS-ERIC research infrastructure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New technologies reveal more from ancient texts<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thanks to these new technologies, the latest edition of Philodemus\u2019 <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History of the Stoic School<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, edited by Kilian Fleischer of the University of T\u00fcbingen, a member of the GreekSchools project, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contains 10% more Greek text than the previous 1994 edition<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014a major achievement that has shed new light on <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the life and chronology of Zeno of Citium, founder of the Stoa, and on other eminent Stoic philosophers who followed him, such as Chrysippus and Panaetius, the philosopher who brought Stoicism to Rome.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Other papyri<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> have also revealed remarkable surprises in new editions recently published by members of the GreekSchools project. In particular, the new edition of papyrus <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PHerc. 1508<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, edited by Eleni Avdoulou, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contains 45% more Greek text<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> than before and has revealed the true nature of the work as it has come down to us: not a history of the Pythagorean school, as long believed, but possibly a history of medicine or, more precisely, a biography of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Greek physicians, including Acron of Agrigentum, founder of the empirical medical school, and Euriphon of Cnidus<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lastly, papyrus PHerc. 1780, thanks to the new edition by Carlo Pernigotti, which has revealed about 30% more Greek text, has proved to be a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collection of wills belonging to members of the Epicurean school rather than a history of the school<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as previously thought. It is, in fact, the only documentary text in the Herculaneum collection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We can now work from perfectly legible images of several Herculaneum papyri, with enough contrast and resolution to enable their study, reading, and edition. This has major implications for our understanding of key figures and moments in the history of Greek philosophy,\u201d says <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Graziano Ranocchia<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-244775 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/papiro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/papiro.png 900w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/papiro-223x300.png 223w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/papiro-762x1024.png 762w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/papiro-768x1032.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe field of non-invasive diagnostics for cultural heritage is being enhanced by ever more advanced methods, increasingly applied in an integrated manner, which enable the visualisation of material features that would otherwise remain inaccessible,\u201d notes <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Costanza Miliani, Director of CNR-Ispc<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cWithin this context, active thermography\u2014an imaging technique operating in the infrared domain\u2014has proved particularly effective in the analysis of the carbonised Herculaneum papyri. This approach allows the detection of contrast signals between the carbon-based ink and the heavily altered papyrus substrate, revealing texts that are otherwise almost completely illegible to the naked eye. It marks a significant advance, opening new prospects both for the philological study of these writings and for the informed conservation of such extremely fragile materials.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis result is an important recognition for our optical diagnostics laboratories, particularly for the Thermography and IR Imaging Lab, which has long developed and applied innovative methods for the non-invasive investigation of cultural heritage,\u201d adds <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ivo Rendina, Director of CNR-Isasi<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cThe application to the Herculaneum papyri demonstrates how advanced imaging techniques, suitably adapted to the historical and archaeological context, can recover for the scientific community and society at large a wealth of knowledge long lost to view, while also informing conservation strategies.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe GreekSchools project,\u201d remarks <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alessandro Lenci<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Director of the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics at the University of Pisa, \u201cdemonstrates the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to humanistic research\u2014a hallmark of our Department.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally, great satisfaction was expressed by <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Silvia Scipioni<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Director of the National Library of Naples: \u201cIn the past, attempts to unroll and read the Herculaneum papyri caused severe damage to the artefacts, whose extreme fragility always demands the utmost caution in evaluating analytical methods.
