Entitled <strong>\u201cL\u2019incanto dei libri\u201d<\/strong> (<strong>The Enchantment of Books<\/strong>), the exhibition is open to the public daily from 10 am to 7 pm. It is organised by the<strong> Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics<\/strong> of the University of Pisa, in collaboration with the<strong> Scuola Normale Superiore<\/strong>, the <strong>Biblioteca Universitaria di Pisa<\/strong> (Ministry of Culture), and the <strong>University Library System<\/strong>. It marks the first exhibition of books and manuscripts hosted in the evocative <strong>Torre di Ugolino<\/strong>. The initiative forms part of the cultural programme of the <strong>49th International Conference of the International Association of Byron Societies<\/strong> <strong>(IABS)<\/strong>, titled <em>The Years That Followed: The Afterlives of Lord Byron<\/em>, which has brought together over eighty scholars from around the globe to Pisa (<a href=\"https:\/\/iabsconferencepisa2025.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iabsconferencepisa2025.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182741\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-182741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/ingresso_mostra.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/ingresso_mostra.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/ingresso_mostra-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/ingresso_mostra-768x637.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entry to the Exhibition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Central to the exhibition are two volumes of the periodical <strong>The Liberal. Verse and Prose from the South<\/strong> (London, 1822\u201323), conceived by Byron, Percy B. Shelley, and Leigh Hunt in Pisa and published in only four issues. The <strong>first volume<\/strong>\u2014displayed in its first edition and unique Italian copy\u2014includes Byron\u2019s <em>The Vision of Judgement and Leigh Hunt\u2019s first Letters from Abroad<\/em>, dedicated to Pisa. It was discovered in the Library of the Scuola Normale, originating from the <strong>Delio Cantimori<\/strong> collection. The <strong>second volume<\/strong>, recently acquired by the Library of the Scuola Normale, features, among others, <em>My First Acquaintance<\/em> with Poets by William Hazlitt and Byron\u2019s translation of the first canto of Pulci\u2019s <em>Morgante Maggiore<\/em>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182743\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-182743 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-liberal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-liberal.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-liberal-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-liberal-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the two issues of \u201cThe Liberal\u201d on display<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The exhibition is part of a project of relevant national interest (PRIN 2022 <em>Reviving the Liberal: Literature and Politics between Britain and Italy, 1821\u201323<\/em>) that investigates Anglo-Italian relations in the early decades of the 19th century, particularly the activities of the<strong> Pisan Circle<\/strong>, a group of British poets and intellectuals who resided in Pisa in the early 1820s. The project is led by Roberta Ferrari, full professor of English literature at the FiLeLi Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u201cThe Liberal\u201d was built around an essential cultural project\u00bb, explains <strong>Professor Ferrari<\/strong>. \u00abWe know the Romantics cherished the concept of peoples and nations; through their literary works\u2014and Byron even personally by fighting for Greek independence\u2014they championed the freedom of peoples, and the affirmation of languages and cultures. But \u201cThe Liberal\u201d\u2019s project goes further. The choice to host the exhibition in the<strong> Torre della Fame<\/strong> lends it exceptional evocative power, considering Byron\u2019s profound admiration for Dante\u2019s <em>Divina
