The Postgraduate Degree Course prepares cardiologists with advanced expertise in multimodality cardiovascular imaging, enabling imaging to become an active decision-making tool at the patient's bedside.
The course is designed to develop advanced competencies in:
- Advanced echocardiography: transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echocardiography, including strain imaging, three-dimensional echocardiography and contrast echocardiography.
- Intraprocedural and intracoronary imaging: imaging techniques supporting interventional procedures for valve repair and replacement.
- Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS): cardiopulmonary and venous assessment for haemodynamic management in both critically ill and outpatient settings.
- Multimodality imaging: integrated interpretation of echocardiography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in cardiovascular diseases, combining clinical, imaging and biomarker data.
- Artificial intelligence applications in diagnostic imaging.
- Diagnostic appropriateness: selecting the most appropriate imaging test according to the clinical question.
Career opportunities
The Postgraduate Degree Course prepares highly specialised professionals capable of assuming clinical and organisational leadership roles in hospitals and university healthcare settings.
Career opportunities include:
- Head of a Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory / Heart Failure Specialist, responsible for the integrated clinical and imaging management of patients with complex heart failure, using haemodynamic imaging to guide treatment.
- Critical Care Cardiologist, specialising in the management of acutely ill patients through multimodality bedside ultrasound.
- Consultant in diagnostic and therapeutic care pathways (PDTAs), supporting the optimisation of clinical and imaging workflows.
- Clinical Researcher, conducting clinical trials focused on multimodality imaging and the integration of novel biomarkers into cardiovascular practice.
