Fosca Giannotti was born on 4 October 1958 in Castiglione Garfagnana (Lucca, Italy). She graduated from University of Pisa 1982. Since 2007 she is Director of Research at ISTI CNR in Pisa. She started her carrier as Research Fellow at University of Pisa (1982-1984); employed as distinguished researcher at Systems & Management R&D Lab, Pisa (1987-1990), CNR researcher between 1990-2001 at CNUCE-CNR, Pisa and Senior Researcher at ISTI, Pisa between 2001-2007. She has been visiting researcher: MCC, Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, Austin, USA funded by a NATO-CNR fellowship (1989-1990), CWI Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1993), UCLA Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of California at Los Angeles (1995 and 2006), Barabási Lab, Center for Complex Network Research, Northeastern University, Boston (2009-2010). She has been appointed as National Coordinator of the ICT Department of CNR, Area Data mining and Semantic Web. (2006-2009).

F.G. co-leads the Pisa KDD Lab - Knowledge Discovery and Delivery Lab - a joint research initiative of the University of Pisa and the Information Science and Technology Institute of the Italian National Research Council, the earliest Italian research group specifically targeted at data mining, and one of first in Europe http://kdd.isti.cnr.it
F.G. is currently the general chair of ECML-PKDD Steering Committee, she is member, or area chair or senior chair of the program committee of the main international conferences on data mining and knowledge discovery: KDD, ECML-PKDD, PAKDD, CIKM, WSDM, SIAM, ICDM. She has been program co-chair of ECML/PKDD 2004, the European conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases, and the program chair of ICDM 2008, the IEEE Int. Conf. on Data Mining.
Teaching activity: F.G. has taught classes on programming languages, databases and data mining in universities in Italy and abroad, both at undergraduate and at graduate/doctoral level. Currently, she teaches: i) Data Mining at the graduate program of Business Informatics, University of Pisa. ii) Data Mining and CRM at the master program MAINS (Service Management, Innovation and Engineering) of Scuola Superiore S. Anna, Pisa. F.G. has been the advisor of more than 50 master theses and 8 PhD theses.
