Global appeal at the UN to set limits on AI – Dino Pedreschi among 200 promoters

Pedreschi is of the few Italians supporting the international initiative that brings together Nobel laureates, former heads of state and leading AI experts

Dino Pedreschi, professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pisa and a pioneer of data science in Europe, is among the founding signatories of Red Lines on AI, the global appeal calling on the international community to adopt a binding agreement on the limits to the use of artificial intelligence in applications deemed unacceptable. Officially presented on 22 September at the United Nations General Assembly, the initiative has already gathered more than 300 additional endorsements worldwide and is attracting considerable international attention.

Among the signatories are ten Nobel laureates, nine former heads of state or ministers, four Turing Award winners—the highest distinction in computer science—and numerous experts from leading companies in the field, including Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic. Italy is represented by a small but distinguished group of figures, including Giorgio Parisi, Enrico Letta, Maria Chiara Carrozza, Fosca Giannotti and Dino Pedreschi, which underscores the prominent role of the Pisa scientific community in the international debate on artificial intelligence.

The appeal highlights the risks arising from the uncontrolled development of advanced AI systems—from disinformation and social manipulation to threats to global security—and calls for an international agreement to be signed by 2026 that would set clear, verifiable limits supported by robust enforcement mechanisms.

Red Lines on AI is promoted by the Centre pour la Sécurité de l’IA (CeSIA), The Future Society and the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence (CHAI) at UC Berkeley, with the support of over ninety partner organisations.
