Regulations regarding the activity of Athenaeum Committee for animal experimentation
I - Aims
Art. 1 The present Regulations cover the activity of the Animal Experimentation Athenaeum Committee , which is established by D.R. 017731 of 12 may 1999 accordingly with D. Lgs 116/92 regarding the protection of the animals used with testing and other scientific aims.
II - Composition
Art. 2 The Committee is made up of 6 members coming from the Teaching Staff, who are named by the Dean of the University to represent the scientific fields which are interested in animal testing; one of the nominated members is required to hold the position of President of the Committee.
At its first meeting the Committee also nominates a Vice president from its members.
The Committee is also assisted by a secretarial staff which is responsible of the arrangement and of the recording of the meetings and of all the acts deriving from the resolutions.
The members of the Committee remain in office for three years and can be reconfirmed.
III - Tasks
Art. 3 - The Committee is required to promote and watch over the compliance of the D. Lgs. 116/92 clause 1 by all the involved departments which are authorized to make experimentation on the animals.
The competences of the Committee are:
-monitoring the health of the animals which are used for experimental aims;
-cooperating with the proper offices to ensure the animals better living conditions
-recognizing all the practices which can be considered harmful for the animal health or detrimental for animal rights and realizing the needed corrective measures
-evaluating the protocols concerning the research with animal experimentation and expressing an ethical-scientific opinion before transmitting them to the Ministry for Health
-promoting training and refresher courses concerning animal protection and organizing conventions to be attended by students and all the operators who are interested in biomedical experimentation
Art. 4 Within the 30th November of every year the Committee shall produce a written report of its activity
IV - Resources
Art. 5 - In the execution of its duties the Committee is assisted by professional veterinarians who are required by the Athenaeum to monitor the animal health conditions according to clause 5 of the D. Lgs. 116/92
Art. 6 The Committee has free access to all the data and financial documents it needs to execute its duties.
Art. 7 - A specific fund is established in the annual budget to finance all the initiatives that the Committee promotes
V - Running
Art. 8 - The President calls the meetings and coordinates its running. The call must include the agenda and the necessary documentation and must be transmitted to each member at least 5 days before the date of the meeting with a written communication.
Art. 9 - The Committee meets periodically to examine the Research protocols; in any case , it meets every three months and whenever is needed by the President or another member of the Committee
Art. 10 - The sessions are fully valid if a quorum of half of the members plus
one is present at the meeting
Art. 11- The resolutions are assumed by a majority of open votes.
Art. 12 - The members of the Committee are required to attend all the formally
called meetings and justify any probable absence with a written note.
Three unjustified absences involve the loss of the task.

13 - The veterinarians who have obtained the task of supervisors under clause
5 are admitted to attend the meetings as external experts.
Art. 14 - Minutes shall be made at each hearing and approved in the next one;
then it should be submitted to the Dean and the Administrative Director.
VI - Final Rules
Art. 15 - Although not specifically provided for herein, reference is made to
the Statute and to the general Regulations of University in force
Art. 16 - This Regulation shall enter into force in the same forms provided by
the Statute of University of Pisa
