The entry in Italy

European citizens can circulate freely in Italy but must have and carry an identity document.
If they want to stay in Italy for a period longer than 3 months, they must request a residence card (carta di soggiorno) which is necessary to confirm the right to stay that all citizens of the European Union have. They have to apply for the carta di soggiorno at the Immigration Office of the local Police Headquarters (Questura)

UE Countries: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Esthonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary.

SEE Countries (not UE members): Island, Liechtenstein, Norway.

Foreign citizens (belonging to countries outside the European Union and the SEE) must have a passport and an entrance visa, which is the authorization to enter in the territory of the Italian Republic for transit purposes or to stay, and that it can be required for different reasons, depending on the purpose of the travel; the visa is issued by the Italian Embassies and Consulates in their countries.
Within 8 working days by the entry in Italy they must request a stay permit (permesso di soggiorno) at the Immigration Office of the local Police Headquarters (Questura). The stay permit legitimates their staying and which must be valid for the same period and the same purposes declared on the visa document.
