Each academic year is marked by a number of formal ceremonies.
This is the University of Pisa's most important official ceremony. The chancellor gives an inauguration speech briefly summarising the previous academic year's activities and presenting the main lines of development for the following, covering the University's fundamental policy decisions.
The "Ordine del cherubino" is awarded to teachers who have contributed towards increasing the prestige of the University through their particular scientific merits or contribution to the life and running of the University.
The ceremony traditionally takes place on the 15th of February, marking the birth date of Galileo Galilei, undoubtedly the University of Pisa's most illustrious teacher to date.
The University of Pisa bestows the title of Degree or Doctorate honoris causa to certain individuals who have distinguished themselves in a particular way through scientific or social and civil merit. Among the most recent honoris causa graduates we remember François Treves, Mirella Freni, Romano Prodi, Peter Brown and Burton Richter.
The students who have graduated with honours are presented their certificate during an official ceremony held in the Palazzo dei Congressi Auditorium, at the start of the academic year.
The "Galileo Galilei" Award is a recognition granted to foreign scholars eminently concerned with arguments regarding Italian civilisation: Archaeology and Etruscology, History of Literature, Language, Political History, History of Art, Music, Philosophy, Science, Law and Economics.
There is an annual ceremony celebrating University of Pisa graduates from twenty-five and fifty years ago. During the ceremony, held at the Palazzo dei Congressi Auditorium, the ex-students are presented with the "cherubino", the symbol of the University.
