Path: English / Students / Student services / USID Service Unit for the Support and Integration of Disabled Students

The University of Pisa has long administered an action programme directed at
the progressive removal of obstacles that arise between disabled students and
university life, in an attempt to improve the possibility of their active participation
in all its activities and structures.
Set up in 2000, USID
coordinates the services provided by the University in favour of disabled
students' integration.
Disabled students are offered assistance for taking class-notes and obtaining study materials, primarily with the collaboration of classmates. When necessary, alternative and individualised ways of taking tests and examinations are identified along with course lecturers.
The best solutions for granting disabled students' access to classrooms, lecture halls and buildings and facilitating their full participation in all study activities are identified along with the collaboration of the study coordinators and faculty offices.
A personal assistance service is provided for students with mobility problems to enable the necessary travel arrangements to reach the University. The service also makes three predisposed vehicles available, two of which are equipped with chair lifts.
Assistance is offered with the technological and informational support instruments for various forms of disability, in collaboration with experts from the sectors. Attention is also given to providing predisposed, equipped computer within the University's teaching laboratories and library centres.
The Socrates mobility programme, that offers the possibility of studying abroad, provides for integrative study grants for disabled students. USID provides assistance in the compilation of the necessary administrative paperwork to obtain the grant. There is also the possibility of making use of accompaniment and personal assistance services for brief study periods abroad.
In collaboration with the University's Building Service, USID monitors accessibility of the structures and, when possible, promotes the immediate removal of obstacles. A general plan for the elimination of architectural barriers is in a preparatory stage.
USID is able to carry out its activities thanks also to the collaboration of
volunteers, mostly University of Pisa students, who chose to dedicate some of
their time to supporting activities in favour of disabled students.
This collaboration is formalized through the stipulation of employment contracts,
with various pay levels according to the type of commitment.
A short
questionnaire is available to make the contacts easier between those who wish to
volunteer their services and the USID office staff.
Students with invalidity of 66%, or above, are exonerated from payment of university
fees.
Students with a recognised disability, or invalidity of 66%,
or above, can make use of allocated accommodation places for an extended period.
These students can also benefit from allowances made in the calculation of the
requisites of merit for the allocation of study grants.
