ETD - Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The University of Pisa provides a service for the consignment, archiving and consultation of theses in electronic format.
This digital library includes doctorate and degree theses.

The University of Pisa has, since 1999, complied with the NDLTD (Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations) project created by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in collaboration with other educational institutions. The NDLTD is an important instrument for the international circulation of ideas and the development of student and various university research activities.

The information technology system set up for the service simplifies administrative procedures and archive management and presents many advantages for the various users.

Students can carry out the thesis consignment procedure almost completely automatically, and they have more time for the editing of final versions.
The consignment procedure of the theses in electronic format (ETD) is totally separate from the electronic consultation: students therefore have the choice of whether, or not, to make their work freely available on the website.

Lecturers are able to present editorial opportunities for merit-worthy works by their students, document, also on an international level, the course of study and research undertaken, compare these activities with those carried out at other centres and monitor possible cases of plagiarism or even the simple copying of themes assigned as a thesis.

The Student Office can simplify the procedure for the degree application and communication with Faculties and Libraries can be partially, or completely, computer-based. Furthermore, the electronic conservation of theses greatly contributes to alleviating the serious problem of archive space.

The Libraries can provide bibliographical-documentary assistance already in the formal compilation phase of the thesis, as well as ensure the effective availability of the theses to the national and international scientific community, in full accordance with laws on author's rights.
