The Phd Degrees constitute the basic foundation of training for scientific research. The courses offered are one of the points of excellence of the University of Pisa, that invests considerable resources in their organization.
The Phd Degrees aim to form professional figures able to carry out, independently and effectively, advanced research activities within universities and public and private organisations.
The courses commence in January and run for 3 years.
Admission is by means of an open contest, consisting of an examination and assessment of candidates' qualifications, usually held in November.
The University of Pisa welcomes the participation of foreign students, reserving a contest relevant for foreign students resident abroad, in possession of an academic qualification equivalent to the old Italian "laurea" or to the "laurea specialistica", both obtained from non-Italian institutions. Application is open from July to September
A number of study grants are available for each course. The net monthly amount of the study grant is 1039.10 euro. The winners enrolled at the the "Galileo Galilei Ph.D. School" will receive a contribution of 200,00 euro per month for lodging expenses.
The courses conclude with the discussion of the research thesis, expounding the original results produced during the three years of the doctorate.
